Nursing Career Opportunities at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center

Emergency Department

Approximately 43 percent of Cape Fear Valley Medical Center inpatients are admitted through the Emergency Department, making Cape Fear Valley’s 57-bed emergency department a major portal to the medical center. In addition to the main emergency department, Cape Fear Valley has a Children’s Emergency Department, a Chest Pain Center, a Fast Track area and a Trauma Center.

We’ve been working hard to make changes in our Emergency Department to streamline care. Bedside registration reduces chart and treatment delays, a plus for the busy nurse. A recent enhancement to patient care is bedside Troponin testing, which reduces the time it takes to get a patient to the Cath Lab and improves the quality of care for chest pain patients. A simple but significant change is reducing the amount of time spent on documentation for nursing staff. The nursing assessment form is now equipped with check boxes for faster documentation.

The Heart & Vascular Center

Cardiac Diagnostics

With four echocardiography labs, three treadmill rooms, EKG and EECP, our Cardiac Diagnostics Department has great facilities and one of the best teams around. The department also provides follow up for pacemakers and internal defibrillators. Staff work eight-hour shifts and enjoy working on a team with low employee turnover.

Cardiac Cath Lab

Our cath lab has enjoyed approximately 15 percent growth over the past five years. We perform diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations in our two cath labs, with a third lab available for electrophysiology studies. Patients range in age from 30 to 85 with most being age 50 to 70. Cath techs and nurses enjoy flexible scheduling with a choice of eight-hour, ten-hour and 12-hour shifts. If you enjoy patient care and the camaraderie of a smaller team, the cardiac cath lab may be a perfect fit.

Cardiac Cath Lab Observation Unit

Nurses who enjoy patient teaching will find this unit to be just what they are looking for. Nurses prepare the patient for the cardiac cath and recover them in one of six private rooms and four semi-private beds. Most patients stay four to 24 hours and are monitored via telemetry. Nursing documentation is done online. Nurses work eight hour shifts Monday through Friday.

Cardiac Care Step Down Unit (CCSD)

Our patients are on the road to recovery in this 29-bed stepdown unit with many patients monitored by telemetry. The average length of stay is just under four days. Nurses work 12-hour shifts and many participate in our unit council. If you enjoy working with cardiac patients and are dedicated to teamwork and excellence in customer service, we’ve got a spot for you!

Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU)

If you crave the fast pace and excitement of cardiac surgery, then our 11-bed Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit is the place to be. We offer hope and healing to an adult population in need of highly skilled nurses, plus good old-fashioned TLC. If your cardiovascular nursing skills are top-notch, you’ll excel in the CSICU.

Cardiovascular Step Down Unit (CVSU)

Cardiac surgery patients continue their progress in our eight-bed Cardiovascular Step-Down Unit. Each room is equipped with telemetry.

Nurses work 12-hour shifts with self-scheduling. With our small nursing unit and one nurse to four patient ratio, nurses who crave a cohesive environment will enjoy working in CVSU.

Intensive Care Units

Cardiac ICU (CICU)

With ten private rooms, we provide individual monitoring of each of our patient’s vital signs and hemodynamic status.

Medical ICU (MICU)

We focus on treating medical patients who need specialized intensive nursing care in our 10-bed unit.

Surgical ICU (SICU)

Critically ill surgical patients receive specialized care in our 10-bed unit.

Neurosurgical Step Down

Each bed on our six-bed unit can monitor individual vital signs and the hemodynamic status of our patients. On this unit you’ll work with just a few physicians and be part of a dynamic team.

5 South Medical

This unit recently added telemetry beds to enhance care for these acutely ill medical patients. We have a diverse staff that ranges from new graduate nurses to very experienced nurses and are looking for nurses who are interested in providing quality, personalized care to our patients. Most of the staff works 12-hour shifts with self-scheduling. We can offer full-time, half-time and per diem positions to meet the needs of your schedule.

A majority of our patients are cared for by Cape Fear Valley Health System’s hospitalists, which creates a unique environment for the nurse. Since our physicians remain on our floor for most of the day shift, staff has ready access to their expertise. With a pharmacist, physical therapist, social worker and two case managers on the floor, we truly offer a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

The camaraderie of our nurses extends beyond the hospital walls with many of them getting together on their free time for lunch, dinner or celebrations. If you like to cook – or eat – you’ll love working on 5 South as our staff is always bringing in food to share!

6 South Oncology

This 39-bed unit also recently added telemetry beds to enhance care for our patients. While our focus is on care of the cancer patient, medical patients can be admitted to this unit as well. Length of stay is typically five to six days. Many of our patients return for treatment regularly. Nurses have the opportunity to use all nursing skills, plus learn new ones daily. Nurses learn to administer chemotherapy and care for patients with radiation implants.

Because many of our patients are being treated for cancer, compassion and caring in a nurse is a must. We treat not only the patient, but their family as well. We incorporate pet therapy and music therapy into our unit to enhance our patients’ care.

Nurses work 12-hour shifts with flexible staffing available to meet the needs of the employee. Continuing education is valued and every effort is made to ensure that all staff have the opportunity to fulfill their professional goals. Our nursing team is made up of nurses with diverse experience from the new graduate to registered nurses with 20 years of nursing experience. Teamwork is the hallmark of 6 South, and experienced nurses are always willing and able to mentor the new nurse.

7 South Surgical

This 34-bed unit will expand to 48 when Valley Pavilion opens in 2008. The majority of our patients are orthopedic patients recovering from total knee and total hip replacements, although we have neurosurgery and general surgery patients as well.

Three physical therapists provide therapy twice a day to our orthopedic patients during the week. Patients also receive physical therapy on the weekends. Together with the physical therapists, our nurses help our joint replacement patients get back on their feet.

This is a fast-paced unit with ten to twelve discharges daily and just as many admissions, so our nurses are never bored. Nurses on this unit enjoy self-scheduling with 12-hour shifts. Our nurses work well together and enjoy planning celebrations for weddings, new babies and other milestones.

If you are dedicated to providing quality patient care and have a positive attitude, we’d like you to join our fantastic team!

8 South Medical/Surgical Step Down Unit (MSSD)

Almost all patients on this 34-bed unit are monitored by telemetry with some on ventilators as well. Most of our patients are age 50 and older with diagnoses of congestive heart failure, dysrrythmia, chest pain, COPD, pneumonia, stroke or respiratory failure, and they often have secondary diagnoses of diabetes, renal failure and hypertension. With that patient population, MSSD provides a well-rounded starting ground for new graduates on which to build a solid knowledge base. Nurses work 12-hour shifts, with the night shift working on tracks. The day shift has flexible scheduling. Nurses who work on MSSD are qualified and encouraged to join the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Nurses who wish to continue with their education will find MSSD management to be accommodating.

In addition to post-partum women, we care for antepartum patients with gestational diabetes, preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, pyelonephritis, and other complications of pregnancy.

Nurses may work eight-hour shifts or 12-hour shifts with self-scheduling. Our unit boasts many experienced nurses, so new graduates will have plenty of mentors.

3 South Women’s Unit

In our 25-bed unit, we care for patients after D&Cs, hysterectomies, laser surgery, laparoscopic surgery, Burch procedures and PID. Our eight-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is custom-designed to care for critically ill children and those at high risk for life-threatening events. We’re a regional leader in pediatric intensive care. You’ll work with a dedicated group of Pediatric Intensivists to care for children with respiratory illness, cardiac disease, multiple organ system failure,      trauma, sepsis, meningitis or shock.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The emotional rewards are well worth the investment in our 44-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We offer a 23-bed Intermediate Care Nursery, plus a 21-bed Level III unit. Our team includes four board-certified neonatologists, as well as neonatal nurse practitioners. Patients are referred from throughout the region because our reputation is outstanding for neonatal intensive care!

Our NICU is known for its teamwork, and many nurses have worked for more than 10 years on our unit. Accordingly, we have a high level of professionalism and an expectation that nurses will continue their professional development. In fact, we currently have 19 nurses on the Clinical Ladder!
